Fruliyo Ginoes, more commonly known as Fru, was born in Sharlayan, in the Dravanian Hinterlands, in the city that would eventually become Idylshire, many years in the future.
Fru informed her parents that she was a girl when she was 5 years old, but expressed that she liked the name they'd given her and didn't want to change it.As a child, Fru spent most of her time with her best friend, Zhana and did everything she could to get the attention of Y'shtola Ruhl.Even as a child, Fru spent a lot of her time protecting people. She was the first to jump in if something seemed unfair, and had little problem using her fists to solve her problems instead of her words.
She also struggled in a society that valued scholars and archons above all else, due to the fact that she was 'Fae-touched' (in our language: She's got ADHD, and is Dyslexic). Because of these difficulties in more formal learning environments, Fru often got written off as stupid, despite her impressive memory for information when given to her.As she got older, Fru made decisions about her transition, employing a spell caster to enhance her chest somewhat, and taking hormones, but denying bottom surgery, having no trouble with that part of herself. When Fru was 17, the Garlean Empire began to be a significant problem, and so came the mass evacuation of the Sharlayan within the Hinterlands, taking people back to the Sharlayan motherland.
This was not something that Fru approved of, thinking that if they remained within Eorzea they could help those who couldn't evacuate to somewhere safe, but she was still a teenager and wasn't listened to.She only took place in the evacuation due to honour. A few months earlier, during a bout of teenaged recklessness, Fru had managed to get a friend, Salia, pregnant. They both knew that this was no grand romance, no great love, but they were friends and Fru refused to even imagine leaving her child behind, despite her age.Kawara, their daughter, was born while they were travelling. (A note here: Fru's parents both believed the naming traditions for Miqote to be restrictive and ridiculous, hence refusing to follow them for Fruliyo herself. Both Fru and Salia agreed with this assessment, hence Kawara also not following naming conventions)
Due to reports of bandits and possibly Garlean airships in the area, the group that they were travelling with was unable to stop, despite the recent birth.
The onset of storms and cold caused both Kawara and her mother to die, no matter what Fru did to try and keep them both safe and warm.Heartbroken, Fru took a lock of Kawara's hair, set it in a locket, and ran from her people, heading to Eorzea.Despite the travel being long and arduous, Fru eventually found herself in Limsa Lominsa, and settled there as a hired muscle and fisherwoman. Her peace was not to last, as the Empire only become a bigger and bigger threat.
Fru signed up to fight them with little reservation, and was at the battle of Cartenau as a foot soldier.
She knew there were other Sharlayans there, and did her best to keep her presence hidden from them. She didn't want any reminders of the home that she'd left or all that she'd lost. After the battle, and the ensuing Calamity, despite being burned, injured and exhausted, Fru returned to Limsa, having grown fond of the Waterside city. She did her best to find joy in what she could, aiding in the rebuilding and fishing whenever she got the chance. But being blessed with the Echo as she was, Fru did not get to keep her life of simple pleasures.
It was Zhana that found her first, scolding her nigh on endlessly for vanishing without explanation. Despite having done all she could to avoid reminders of her past, Fru found herself grateful that Zhana had found her, realising that she'd missed the friends she'd once had. With the two of them reunited, they quickly found themselves embroiled in the reunification of the Eorzean Alliance, and dealing with the Scions.Even though it had been years since Fru had last seen Y'shtola, she couldn't deny that the crush that she'd harboured since she was only a little girl was still there, and still very much a problem, as Y'shtola appeared to be nothing but professional when they spent time together. One evening, a little tipsy, and having been rather egged on by Zhana, Fru approached Y'shtola and confessed. For a long moment, it appeared that she was going to be humiliated, before Y'shtola sighed, admitted that she knew and she'd been considering how best to handle the situation, since they had to work together and should the relationship end, it could make things difficult. She suggested a talk once Fru and Zhana were both sober, which threw both of them, given that while they hadn't been SUBTLE, Fru and Zhana had told no one that their relationship had long since passed that of friends and work colleagues. The three of them entered into a Polyamorous relationship after a lot of discussion, along with the settings of boundaries, and rules, allowing for all of them to feel comfortable.Fru continued to aid those who asked for her help, alongside her fighting of Primals and aiding in politics (something she never had much skill in, so her aid was mostly to just sit there and look menacing & nodding when everyone else did)It was during this time that Fru also met Alphinaud Leveilleur. Initially, she did not like him. She found him annoying and condescending and spent a lot of her time wanting to just... Smack him.
The only thing that saved him from a lot of her wrath was the shared community they had in both being Trans. Despite her frustration with him as a person, Fru did what she could to aid him with his transition (Especially since he was still dressing identically to his twin sister)With everything that had been going on, Primals, dragons, the threat of war, and losing her connection to Hydalean thanks to Midgarsomr, Fru was surprisingly grateful for the chance to attend a party in Ul'dah.
But, as often happens in Fru's life, it did not end well.During her escape, Fru had to leave behind her friends, and Y'shtola, not knowing if any of them would survive, let alone whether they'd see each other again. The only people Fru had left, at the end of a night of fear and running, were Zhana and Alphinaud. As they found a safe place to stop, supported by Haucherfant, Alphinaud began to blame himself for things outside of his control. Fru's response was predictably violent. She gave into a long controlled urge and smacked him 'round the back of the head. She then pointed out that he was 19, he was not to blame for the evils of other men and couldn't be expected to know everything. And then said that if he attempted to self blame like that again, she'd make it hurt.
It only took one more smack round the head for Alphinaud to get the message. After that, Fru viewed Alphinaud as a younger brother (an annoying one that she keeps trying to get rid of, but a younger brother all the same) and the two can often be found discussing some obscure knowledge or debating ideologies.Again, despite being in a state of worry about the fate of her friends and Y'shtola, Fru threw herself into aiding Ishgard. She used the cities troubles to distract herself from her worries.Once they were able to reunite with Y'shtola, Fru became something of a limpet for a few days. There was almost never a time where she wasn't touching Y'shtola, and if touching wasn't a possiblity, she stood as close as possible.
This wasn't helped by the fact that Fru nearly instantly noticed that Y'shtola was now blind, and couldn't bare the thought of anything happening to her that could have been prevented.During their travels, the group of Sharlayans found themselves back in their old home, now called Idylshire.
While Y'shtola, Alphinaud and Zhana all seemed to enjoy getting to see their once home again, Fru found the entire thing rather traumatic and did all she could to keep busy and avoid spending time in the ruins of Sharlayan. With Y'shtola now returned, and Ishgard moved to something of peace, they started looking for the other Scions, recovering Thancred from the wilderness, and discovering that Yda and Papalymo had been aiding the Ala Mhigan Resistance. Before Fru could reunite with Yda and Papalymo, she got to reunite with Alphinaud twin sister, Alisaie.
She had been poisoned and brought to Ishgard to her brother. She bore news of a group calling themselves the 'Warriors of Darkness'.Fru did what she could to stop the Warriors of Darkness, learning that their plan was to sow chaos and cause another Calamity.
No matter how hard she tried to stay calm, that sent Fru into a rage that would frighten even the hardiest of warriors. When she learned the Warriors of Darknesses reasons for what they were doing, she had some sympathy for them, but not enough to temper her rage at all they were risking, at all of the suffering that they would have caused, had they succeeded. After sending the Warriors of Darkness back to the First with the Word of the Mother, Fru still struggled to calm her anger.
This was not helped by 'The Griffin' and his plans for the liberation of Ala Mhigo. With Papalymo's sacrifice, Fru began to struggle more and more to keep her temper in check. Both Zhana and Y'shtola did all they could to try and help, but nothing seemed to work. Fru was simply a bubbling pot, ready to boil over at a moment's notice. This brought some concern to Lyse, who revealed herself as such, explaining that she'd been posing as her sister Yda for many years.
It was well known within the Scions that Fru hated lying, and with her new anger issues, Lyse was prepared for a shouting match. However, Fru was openly supportive, including later pulling Lyse aside and offering her a shoulder to cry on, noting that she knew a thing or two about hidden grief, and explaining about her own losses, including showing Lyse the locket with Kawara's hair, which she normally kept safe in a pouch she carried everywhere (along with her two wedding rings, one for Zhana and one for Y'shtola)With agreement from Y'shtola and Zhana, Fru also began to flirt with Lyse, testing the waters so to speak. She's very fond of the fact that she can make Lyse go very red and stammer. When the Empire, and most notably, Zenos, attacked Rhalgr's Reach, Y'shtola sustained an injury that left her comatose.Fighting Zenos one on one, and still full of so much rage, Fru left herself wide open for an attack from the master swordsman, and he attempted to slice her in half.
Fru was left with a gaping wound from her right hip to her left shoulder, which got partway healed by magic from Zhana and others in the area, everyone doing what they could to keep the still living alive.Despite this injury, Fru refused to rest. She near immediately set off for Doma to aid the liberation effort there, knowing that if she sat still, she'd think about Y'shtola and drive herself mad with worry and grief. While still somewhat pursuing Lyse (desperate for the normalcy that the flirting offered her), Fru also noticed that Alisaie had something of a crush on her.
Upon noticing, and starting to think about it, Fru was hit with a wave of guilt, feeling that she was betraying her relationship because she couldn't discuss it with Y'shtola, so pulled away from Alisaie to assuage those feelings somewhat. After liberating two (2!) Countries, and gaining an extra girlfriend, Fru finally got something of a chance to rest, and spent most of that time fussing over Y'shtola, and being grumpy when she got fussed over in return (despite the fact that Y'shtola was fully healed and Fru's wound was still technically healing.)But the universe conspires and so does your writer, and alas, the peace and joy cannot last.During their downtime, the polycule does discuss Alisaie (including Fru pointing out that it'll piss Alphinaud off as a positive to including her in the relationship) and do eventually agree, allowing Fru freedom from the guilt she'd been carrying. It's around this time that the people around Fru seem to start taking impromptu naps that they don't seem able to awaken from.
First goes Thancred, then Y'shtola and Urianger, then Alphinaud, before finally Alisaie.
One by one, they pass out, accompanied by a strange vision and a voice that seems to be calling to both Fru and Zhana. They learn that said friends souls are lost, and no one seems to have any answers.
But while searching, Fru finds an artefact that transports both herself and Zhana into another world. The First.Time moves differently across different worlds, so despite it having been, at most, a month and a half, it has been five years for Y'shtola and a year for Alisaie and Alphinaud.
Not to mention that upon arrival, Fru and Zhana are told of a vision that Urianger had, that Fru would soon die and that death would bring about another Calamity.
They don't take this news well...But Fru is who she has always been, and so, despite the threat to herself, she throws herself into helping the First, trusting that her friends would be able to figure out some way to stop her death. While fighting Emet-Selch, it gets revealed that the reason that Fru and Zhana have always been so close, and why they share the Echo and many other traits is because they share the same Soul, split in half between them. This revelation feels both surprising and yet not at all shocking to the two of them, as if they'd perhaps always known it somewhere deep inside of them.
